Machining Line for Cylinder BlocksHaving successfully undertaken a variety of projects in varying degrees of challenge, HMT designed and commissioned a state-of-the-art machining line for automobile components in a most modern plant, thus providing appropriate flexible manufacturing solutions for cylinder blocks, connecting rods, crankshaft and camshaft for the most modern internal combustion engines. Right from grey iron castings to fully finished 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder blocks, with a line output of 60,000 parts per annum, a cycle time of 4 minutes floor-to-floor and a process capability index of 1.33 with a highly advantageous changeover time of 30 to 60 minutes between 4 and 6 cylinder blocks.

The cylinder block line consists of 50 machines out of which HMT has supplied 20 machines for milling, drilling, boring, tapping – both roughing and finishing operations on the cylinder block in single, duplex and multi spindle configurations. The component handling between machines is through roller conveyors.

Providing integrated solutions has been HMT’s strength in the industry. HMT has provided a set of critical machines on the cylinder block line for accurate boring of crankshaft, camshaft and pump bores and dowel holes.

The Connecting Rod machining line consists of 5 machines with an output of 90 pieces per hour.

HMT has also supplied 4 machines for machining of crankshaft thus offering a package solution for critical engine components. The critical operations of recentering, pad milling, drilling, hole milling, tapping are carried out on conventional and CNC SPMs to meet the production rate.

The 2 spindle drilling machine supplied by HMT performs drilling holes on flanges on camshafts.

HMT’s machines in addition to being highly productive incorporate a number of features that allow high levels of flexibility and at the same time, do not compromise on safety features. The safety features for foolproof operation include opposite movements interlocking, actuated motions monitored with separate sensors and visual indications, component identification for 4 and 6 cylinder block with automatic selection of appropriate machining cycle, and double break contacts for switching on solenoids.

This modernistic automobile component plant also benefits from a very high degree of flexibility. The changeover time between 4 and 6 cylinder blocks is just 30 to 60 minutes and with a process capability index of 1.33, a cycle time of 4 minutes floor-to-floor and a high uptime in all machines.
